Vavaʻu Group (Northern Tonga)

Vava'u is the most visited of Tonga's island groups, a compact cluster of around 60 islands in an area roughly 18 by 16 nautical miles. The group centres on Neiafu, a port town built on a steep hillside above one of the finest natural harbours in the Pacific. Most of the islands are uninhabited, and the sheltered waters between them make Vava'u the main cruising ground in Tonga for visiting yachts.

Humpback whales arrive in Vava'u from July and remain through October. The group is one of the primary locations in the world for licensed whale swimming, and several operators work out of Neiafu. Regulations apply throughout Tonga: a licensed guide is required, groups are limited to four people per whale, and vessels must remain at least 300 metres clear. Kiwi Magic is one of the longer-established operators, running since 1991 with a maximum of four guests per trip.

Two sea caves near Port Maurelle are a highlight of the Vava'u cruising ground. Swallows Cave on Kapa Island is a large sea cave accessible by dinghy, with a high vaulted entrance best visited in the afternoon when sunlight penetrates the interior. A passage at the back of the cave leads to a second chamber, historically used for feasts. Mariner's Cave, on the northwest side of Nuapapu Island, is accessed by a short underwater swim through a submerged entrance. Inside, the compression of air as swell fills the cave turns the atmosphere to mist, clearing instantly as the swell recedes.

The Clan MacWilliam wreck is a 130-metre cargo vessel in Neiafu Harbour, lying at depths ranging from 20 to 40 metres and covered in nudibranchs, bubble shrimps, clownfish, and fluorescent coral. Ax-Factor Diving, located 250 metres from the wreck with its own jetty, specialises in guided dives on the site.

Mount Talau National Park rises to 131 metres above Neiafu and is walkable from town. Two viewing platforms at the summit look out over Neiafu Harbour and the Vaipua Lagoon. The ascent is steep but short.

Anna's Traditional Tongan Dance Lessons offer instruction in traditional Tongan dance with explanations of the movements and song meanings. Sessions run in small groups and have consistently strong reviews from visiting sailors.

Vava'u is a port of entry. Yachts arriving into the country must check in at the Fisherman's Wharf. The dock is in poor repair with a crumbling concrete overhang higher than most stanchions; extra fenders set high are advisable. Care should be taken to avoid a sunken fishing vessel on the western end of the dock, and a sandbar on the eastern side.

The Vava'u Environment Protection Association (VEPA) manages several conservation areas within the group. Fishing is prohibited in designated zones and anchoring is strictly prohibited in others. Landing is forbidden on a number of uninhabited islands. Charts showing the protected areas are available locally.
