Marquesas

The Marquesas Islands are the northernmost archipelago of French Polynesia, lying roughly 750 nautical miles northeast of Papeete. The group consists of fourteen islands of volcanic origin, of which six are inhabited. Unlike the other archipelagos of French Polynesia, the Marquesas have no encircling barrier reefs and no lagoons; the islands rise steeply from the open ocean as mountains of dark volcanic rock, deeply incised by valleys and clad in dense forest. This geology gives the Marquesas a dramatically different character from the rest of French Polynesia. Nuku Hiva, the largest island, is the administrative and commercial centre of the archipelago. The islands lie outside the main cyclone belt and can be visited year-round, though the drier months from May to October bring the most settled conditions.

Marquesan tattooing is one of the most celebrated traditional art forms in the Pacific, and its bold geometric patterns have influenced tattoo culture worldwide. For many sailors, leaving the archipelago without one proves irresistible, and skilled artists are found across the island group.

Fatu Hiva's Bay of Virgins at Hanavave is enclosed by dramatic volcanic pinnacles that rise sheer from the water. The island is the last place in French Polynesia where tapa cloth is still produced, made by pounding the bark of mulberry, breadfruit, and banyan trees into material for clothing and decoration; the village of Omoa on the other side of the island is the centre of this tradition, and makers such as Solange sell directly from their homes. A waterfall hike inland from Hanavave leads to a pool at the base of the falls.

Tahuata is widely regarded among cruisers as producing the finest bone carvers in the Marquesas, and artisans are found in the villages of Vaitahu and Hapatoni. The stone church at Vaitahu draws visiting sailors to its Sunday service, conducted in the Marquesan language. The anchorage at Hanamoenoa is a favourite for its white sand beach and for the manta rays that visit regularly.

Hiva Oa's Gauguin Museum in Atuona holds paintings and artefacts from the artist's final years on the island; both Gauguin and the Belgian singer Jacques Brel are buried in the town cemetery. The Me'ae Iipona archaeological site at Puamau on the island's north coast is one of the largest and best-preserved in French Polynesia, reached by a long drive across the island on an unsealed road with remarkable views. The Tiki Souriant sits in a small valley outside Atuona and has become a waypoint marker for sailors completing a Pacific crossing. The Atuaona Museum holds artefacts from archaeological digs built up over decades by a Hawaii-based archaeologist.

Nuku Hiva's largest excavated archaeological area lies near the village of Hatiheu: the Kamuihei, Tahakia and Teiipoka complex contains ceremonial platforms (tohua), stone house foundations (paepae), and petroglyphs depicting human figures, turtles, fish, and geometric forms; a banyan tree on the site is estimated to be over 600 years old. The Notre Dame Cathedral in Taiohae is notable for its interior wood sculptures. The Tiki Site near the waterfront combines ancient and modern tikis and serves as a venue for dance practice and cultural events. The Koueva site above Taiohae holds ruins, tikis, and statues set in dense forest. The walk inland to the Cascade Vaipuamau ends at a freshwater pool at the base of the falls; the water is clear and the swimming is excellent, though mosquitoes are persistent along the trail. From Hakaui Bay, a longer valley walk leads to the Vaipo Waterfall; the route crosses the river repeatedly and the final approach passes beneath steep cliffs from which rocks occasionally fall.

Ua Huka has a long tradition of wood and bone carving, with workshops and studios across the island where visitors can commission work or learn the craft themselves. Cédric Taiaapu offers half-day carving sessions guided by a craftsman from one of the archipelago's established carving families, and POI Art specialises in engravings in bone, wood, and marlin bill. The Three Tikis above the bay of Hane are prehistoric figures set on a hilltop with views across the anchorage. The beach at Flower Stones consists of smooth rounded volcanic rocks; visitors search for pierre fleurie, a mineralised stone said to be among the rarest in the world and unique to the island.

Ua Pou's interior rises to a series of basalt phonolite pinnacles several hundred metres tall, visible from the anchorage at Hakahau. The centre artisanal in Hakahau exhibits and sells stone carving in pierre fleurie alongside wood and bone work, with local artists often working on site. The hike to the cross above the bay is short and well-marked, with views over the anchorage and the surrounding ridgelines.

The absence of barrier reefs means that anchorages in the Marquesas are open roadsteads exposed to ocean swell. Conditions vary considerably between bays and with wind direction, and some anchorages that are comfortable in settled weather become untenable when swell increases. The trade winds accelerate and gust significantly in the lee of each island, and inter-island passages can be boisterous even in settled conditions.

Hiva Oa and Nuku Hiva have regular Air Tahiti connections to Papeete, making them a practical crew change point for the archipelago.

Ua Huka's anchorages are exposed to southerly swell and sea state has a significant bearing on comfort.
