The Sea of Cortez

Last updated: 24 March 2026

Overview

The Sea of Cortez, stretching between the Baja Peninsula and mainland Mexico, is a strikingly remote cruising ground where desert mountains plunge into turquoise water. Jacques Cousteau called it "the aquarium of the world" for its exceptional biodiversity: whales, dolphins, sea lions, and countless reef species thrive here. Along its shores, quiet fishing villages and small ports reveal a blend of authentic Mexican character and traces of historic European industry.

La Paz serves as the region’s hub for provisioning, refueling, and exploring the nearby islands and secluded anchorages that define sailing in the Sea of Cortez.

Attractions

The Archipiélago Espíritu Santo National Park, which includes Isla Espíritu Santo, Isla Partida, and surrounding waters, offers many snorkeling spots as well as sea caves to explore by dinghy on the east coast. Back on land, there are numerous hiking trails, including one that leads from a man made fish trap to a cave with views over the bay below.

Another popular stop is Sea Lion Island (Isia Granito), home to a sea lion colony that can be observed from the yacht or dinghy.

There are several relics of this area’s industrial past that make photogenic shore excursions, including abandoned salt works at Isla del Carmen and San Jose, and the Old Santa Rosalia Foundry in Santa Rosalía, where copper was once mined and processed.

Notes for mariners

Some marine protected areas and national parks in the Sea of Cortez require conservation passes for visiting yachts and may include no‑anchoring zones or other use limits; skippers should confirm current fees and restrictions directly with CONANP (Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas) or the relevant park authority before visiting.

The prime season in the Sea of Cortez is roughly November to April, when temperatures are moderate and regional hurricane risk is lower; during this period, winter and early‑spring “northers” can bring strong northerly winds that affect passage planning and anchorage choice.
